Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero-Cruz was walking with his family dog when he was detained by immigration agents. According to a GoFundMe page that was set up to hold up his family and legal fees, Benjamin was about to turn 18 this month and started his new senior year at the Reseda High School on Thursday.
On Friday, the agency gave a statement that he was being held in the detention of the Department of Homeland Security. Benjamin was from Chile who had illegally stay too long his visa by more than 2 years. According to the visa date, he was supposed to leave the United States on March 15, 2023. But he had been living there illegally for 2 years.
According to the GoFundMe page, when agents picked up him Friday morning, they restrict his dog to a tree. And its collar was untied so the dog could run freely on Sepulveda Boulevard.

Benjamin’s mother spoke about the problems she faced after his detention:
Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said during a news conference that his mother told him about all the problems she was facing because of her son’s detention. His mother, while speaking to the superintendent, added that he is 18 years old but is still a child and has never faced any difficulties in his life.
He further said that they drink water once a day and that there is insufficient food there. And there is so little space in the room that not everyone can sit or lie down comfortably at the same time.
Carvalho said that it was very difficult for her to hold back his tears during the conversation and tears were flowing from her eyes with every word. Benjamin’s mother was very sad after her son’s arrest.
